The smoke does not usually land as far up as it does in the video, although it does still have a chance to fall off quite frequently if thrown EXACTLY as seen.

Line up with the corner of the architecture, walk and release about by the time you get to the wooden planks.
My friends have said that the wood may not always be there, so it may be a graphical setting, otherwise just walk and throw.
